CEVA Logistics kicks off operations for General Motors in Argentina
17 August 2009 - 08:57 CET
CEVA launches its biggest operation in the country, which will include inbound transportation and management of returnable packages for General Motors.Sao Paulo, Brazil, August 17, 2009 - CEVA Logistics, a leading global supply chain management company, has announced the start of its largest operation in Argentina. Under the contract, CEVA will provide inbound transportation services for General Motors (GM) at the sites in the city of Rosario, Santa Fé.
The operation includes the transportation of car parts from 37 suppliers from Argentina and Uruguay, under the milk-run model, all the way to the manufacturer's plant, and the unloading of the trucks involved in the process. The milk-run model consists of planned deliveries and collections at several points, conducted by a single vehicle, according to a predefined itinerary, schedule and frequency.
As part of the services provided by CEVA, the solution combines the delivery of returnable packages to suppliers and the collection of parts to supply the plant using predefined routes with previously established times and frequencies for each point of the routes, according to the production schedule and geographic location of suppliers.
Additionally, CEVA will be responsible for managing GM's returnable packages, controlling its inventory level at each point of the flow - suppliers, factory and transportation. Inside the plant, the operation includes collecting packages from several points of the factory, consolidating them by type, separating packages that are unfit for use, preparing them to be sent to suppliers, and programming and loading the trucks.
In order to support the operation, 30 people were hired and 21 routes were designed, 13 in Buenos Aires, four in Córdoba, three in Rosário and one in Uruguay, totaling approximately 80,000 kilometers and over 520 stops per month, including borders and collection and delivery points. In order to supply parts for the new Chevrolet Ágile, released in September, the operation will increase to surpass 200,000 kilometers traveled per month.
This is the first CEVA milk-run operation to use Transport Management System (TMS) Orion in South America. This Web-based system enables automatic reception of GM Argentina's production schedule, definition of routes, online tracking of travel status and transported products, while also managing the corresponding financial flow, integrating the management of aggregates, transporters and customers.
"This operation is a significant milestone for CEVA in South America", says Nadia Ribeiro, Business Development Vice President for CEVA South America. "It demonstrates our commitment to offering full services to our customers, working throughout the entire supply chain".
