Volkswagen and TNT Logistics expand racking at Midlands Distribution Centre

12 September 2005 - 11:02 CET

Volkswagen Group United Kingdom Limited has invested £1 million in new racking at its Midlands based National Distribution Centre.

Extra racking, covering more than 10,000 sq metres, has been installed at the national parts centre which TNT Logistics operates for the Volkswagen Group in Dordon.

The racking, which houses large panels, bumpers and other bigger items, adds 5,180 product locations to the facility - bringing the total to 193,500 locations.

Neil Crossthwaite, Managing Director TNT Logistics UK, says the extra racking has been part of the plan ever since the 64,000 sq metre centre was opened three years ago. "The only change is that we expected to install this racking in 2007 - but sales of Volkswagen, Seat, Audi and Skoda vehicles in the UK have grown so rapidly, that we needed to add it now."

TNT Logistics and the Volkswagen Group have worked in partnership for almost 20 years. The purpose-built national parts centre opened in early 2002 to replace the warehousing operations which had been spread over seven locations in Milton Keynes.

More than 260 warehouse staff work in the Dordon facility, which operates 24 hours a day, six days a week. Orders are placed by 7pm, with through the night deliveries ensuring the 875 dealers have their parts by 9am the following morning.

Robin Woolcock, Managing Director Volkswagen Group United Kingdom Limited, officially opened the new racking on September 7, 2005.

He said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff at Dordon who have contributed by their hard work to improve the quality of the service to our customers, which not only makes them happy but also sells more parts."

Neil Crossthwaite, Managing Director TNT Logistics UK, says the 20 year relationship with the Volkswagen Group in the UK is a partnership in every sense of the word. "We have continued to challenge each other to find better ways of working - to ensure that both our businesses grow and we provide the best possible service for Volkswagen Group's customers."
